Nugget as a Kitten Nugget Today
Nugget was born into a large feral colony in August 2005. Two of his litter mates died in their third week and their caregiver called the Humane Society for help when it was apparent the other two kittens would soon die. Nugget and his sister Hope had severe eye infections so that their eyelids were stuck together and their eyes were protruding . In the days that followed it became apparent that Hope would not make it. When she died, Nugget was left alone in the care of his rescuers. He was only four weeks old and had to be syringe fed, but he loved to eat, loved to play, loved to sleep, loved to be petted. He loved everything! As he grew it became apparent that Nugget was mentally handicapped and had a neurological problem not unlike cerebral palsy. He could not jump, climb, and run like other kittens, but he could do all those things in his special "Nugget" way. He soon earned himself the nickname "The Baby" because it was apparent he would keep some of his kitten ways forever. He lives with a bunch of other cats and dogs and he has made his place in their midst. They make allowances for him just like his people do. He has one eye that is compromised by the fact that scar tissue has attached his iris to his cornea and causes his pupil to be misshapen. He is deaf because he had an ear polyp that grew to an ear-filling size and had to be removed. He had undescended testicles and had to have major surgery when he was neutered. His main objective in life is to have a good time, get lots of special attention and treats, and to chase any cute girl cats that don't have tails. He thinks they are adorable.ps Nugget's original colony was spay/neutered through the feral cat program.
