The above photos are from the March 29, 2007 Graduation.

New Leash on Life is a collaborative effort of Rutherford County Humane Society, Rutherford County Animal Protection Alliance, Rutherford County Animal Control and the NC Department of Corrections in Spindale. Planning for this project began in September, 2004. Tim Greene has been chairing the committee since its inception. So far twenty-eight dogs have gone through the program and been adopted into a new life!

What exactly is New Leash on Life?
New Leash on Life was launched February 28, 2006 at the NC Correctional Facility on Ledbetter Road in Spindale. Every two months four dogs from Animal Control and eight inmates at the NC Correctional Facility enter into a very special partnership. The inmates learn how to give obedience training to their dogs under the leadership of Cherie McAlister and Myra Crabtree of the RCAPA. The dogs learn how to become wonderful pets for their adoptive owners. After two months, the dogs are adopted out and four more dogs are rescued from the pound to enter the program.

Thank you, Tim Greene
Tim Greene of the Rutherford County Humane Society deserves special recognition for spearheading the construction of the "New Beginnings" kennel. He envisioned what folks are calling the "Cadillac" of kennels. He then set about with leg work and a lot of "fast talk" to obtain the materials he needed. His team of inmates provided the free labor. Together, they have built an outstanding dormitory for the dogs.

Thank you, Rutherford Veterinary Clinic

Rutherford Veterinary Clinic has donated all medical care for the dogs that have been chosen to have this New Leash on Life. All dogs are sterilized, heart worm tested, flea treated, and given free vaccines.
