Jack was the star of the show when Pat Tetrick and Lynn Guzman visited two Fourth grade classes at Harris Elementary School on April 3. Students in Sarah Pruette’s and Donna Kay’s classes had raised $200 to contribute to the work of the Rutherford County Humane Society. Pat spoke to the students about the importance of spay/neuter and also gave them pet care tips. Lynn gave the pupils worksheets that reinforced what Pat was emphasizing.
In the meantime Jack strolled around the classroom, giving everyone a chance to receive an up-close greeting. Jack has a story to tell if he could just tell it. He and several other cats were abandoned by people who moved away and left them. Jack lived for months at the barn where he was abandoned, but the neighbor down the street took food to them and eventually caught them and brought them to our Humane Society Adoption Center. As the “cat ambassador” from the Adoption Center, Jack quietly presented the message to the students that all our companion animals have their own special gifts to share. Since we are the humans in their world, it is our responsibility to give them a chance to blossom. The students at Harris Elementary are beginning what we hope will be a lifelong endeavor to make this world a place where animals can live alongside us, sharing their unique personalities with us and making our lives richer because we care for them.
The Fourth graders at Harris Elementary are helping us by their contribution to keep our adoption center open for cats like Jack who need just a little time to find their perfect home. Two days after his school visit, Jack got adopted! The people who adopted him have a camper, and since Jack is such a good traveler and likes all kinds of people, he is going to get to go camping every weekend with his new family. Jack is the last one of his barn friends to get adopted.
