BELLA

Bella is a female Black Lab/German Shepherd mix, born in May, 2013. She was taken in by a lovelyBella local family(with 3 little girls) on a bitterly cold February night and who fell deeply in love.
But, dad lost his job and since they do not have a fenced-in yard, they felt that it wasn't fair to Bella to not be able to run and play as much as she needed to each day. So they decided to ask H4S CARe for help in finding her a loving family with kids, a LG fenced-in yard, or with an avid daily jogger/hiker. She walks well on-leash and is housebroken. LOVES kids and other dogs, is spayed, micro-chipped, parasite-free and current on all vax and heart worm & flea/tick prevention. Her adoption fee is $250.

HIGGINSHiggins

This is a photo of Higgins and his new family on Long Island, who adopted him on Saturday, May 17, 2014. He had been DUMPED in front of someone's residence about 9PM, just after dark. This is the second time that the same car has dumped dogs at this person's residence.

Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals. Especially for animals who are suffering, for any that are hunted or lost, or deserted or frightened or hungry, for all that must be put to death. We entreat for them all thy mercy and pity and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words. Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals and so to share the blessings of the merciful.-Albert Schweitzer

Our Purpose

Rutherford County has NO shelter for adoptable animals. The only available space for strays & owner-released pets is a high-kill Animal Control facility, run by the local Sheriff's Dept, and inmates from the local jail, which is located next to the county landfill where all potential adopters must drive down an unsavory road lined with drug dealers. Strays are given 72 hours for their owners to claim them. Owner-relinquished pets are given NO time IF space is limited, which is almost always the case, with only 18 runs at this county's only facility. Their only hope is the occasional adopter, or rescue groups willing to make space for them. Rutherford County was a thriving community of textile industries, until NAFTA helped move 90% of our factories to other countries. H4S a non-profit organization made up of hardworking volunteers working together for the good of saving homeless adoptable animals in our area, as fast as we can. We offer low-cost speuters for those who qualify & for strays who will have an opportunity for a good home, we can help defray costs, whenever possible. We also have plans for an educational program where we will supply any teacher willing to teach the importance of compassion towards their furry friends, speutering, the proper care of pets, and what they need to do if they see any neglect or abuse.

Updated: May 26, 2014:....H4S CARes has rescued 7,700+ dogs, 2 cats and 1 pony.

H4S was created in Jan, 2004 when our founder walked into Rutherford Co, NC Animal Control, the only facility for the animals in this county, and learned that their adoptable/success rate for the dogs was a mere 3%. Our founder, having spent many summers volunteering at another shelter, knew she could make a difference for at least some of those on death row at RCAC. So, she dove into the situation.
By February, 2004, H4S had formed a small group of volunteers in the surrounding rural communities in Rutherford Co, where dogs and cats are often dumped off and left to, fend for themselves, wander up to homes begging for food and shelter. Through constant networking with local rural communities about our program, people are contacting us about the many strays being abandoned in their areas, as well as owner-relinquished pets. Some merely have been left to fend for themselves. Some have been left tied up without water or food, or merely abandoned when their owners moved away. In some cases, the pet's owners have been hospitalized or have gone into nursing facilities & can no longer care for them. There is an abundance of reasons why the animals in our area come to need H4S's help. Working with rurally-located folks greatly helps to reduce the numbers of strays and homeless adoptables going into our already filled-to-capacity, outdated 'high-kill' Animal Control facility(with only 18 runs).

Strays tend to have lowered immune systems through neglect and the lack of proper medical attention and available nutrition, which leave them extremely susceptible to contracting the deadly diseases our Southern climate harbors.

Once in our program, they have a much better chance of survival through immediate medical attention, proper nutrition and loving foster care with socialization with both people and other dogs.

Since H4S was created, we have pulled together winning medical support through Rutherford Vet Hospital's , with their 3 vets attending to all the animals needs, they are invaluable to this rescue effort, as we couldn't do what we do without their excellent medical care, dedicated support & respect for our mission and all the animals.

Every animal we rescue, over the age of 8 weeks old is spayed/neutered, dewormed, vaccinated & microchipped, & every dog over the age of 4 months is tested for heartworms. If they should test positive, they are immediately treated. They, too, deserve a second chance, possibly their first chance, at a loving home and family to share their lives with.

Many groups will not rescue a heartworm positive animal because of the high cost of treatment, but we will not turn our backs on the adoptable ones(we do not pass any medical expenses on to new owners).

Most of our rescues are transported to spay/neuter-regulated states in the northeast, where the numbers of adoptables are few and responsible adoptable homes are many. The rescue groups taking our animals are extremely responsible when rehoming each animal.

This means that we only work with groups that are NO-kill, who check all personal and vet references, perform strict home visits and do follow-up visits with the furever families, to ensure that the animal & the adopter are comfortable with the new additions in their lives.

H4S also rehomes seniors & 'special needs' furkids, as they are especially important to us and the least likely to be accepted into the northern organizations/shelters. We also feel that we should never jeopardize their health on long-distance transports. Besides, this way we know where they are, and we can continue to check up on their progress and, hopefully, get updated pictures with their furever families. Many 'special needs' and senior female beagles remain at H4S's sanctuary for the remainder of their lives, as they are the least likely to be adopted and very much appreciated and loved, here.

Through adoptions, sponsorship, and money out of our own pockets, we have been able to keep this program alive and running smoothly, as well as renting a cargo van for each trip north, which carries the animals as far as Rocky Hill, CT, 1Xs a month. We also help transport other rescue's dogs to their new families and/or to no-kill rescues in the northern states, to help cut the amount of fuel being used to get dogs to safe havens.

Help is always needed to help fund our free or low-cost speuters for the stray animals low-income families have taken in & for the rescues H4S takes into our program.

Understandably, many no-kill shelters do not want to be a 'band aid' for the South's over-population problems, so H4S must work extra hard to have all our animals speutered, in good health and ready to find responsible homes with a happy spirit when they arrive in the North.

We thank God, for the enlightened, responsible families who open their homes and hearts to these adoptable animals, rather than buy from breeders and pet shops when there are so many adoptable animals sitting in shelters or rescued from neglected situations who are waiting for a helping hand and unconditional love to share.

We realize, in a logical perspective, that we are not going to be able to
broadly change the World.
But, we know we can be an advocate of change.
We know that we cannot rescue every animal in need,
but little by little, we can help one animal at a time.
We know we CAN make a difference!

****Our goal in rescuing and re-homing animals is to provide them with a
loving home for the rest of their life. The adoption fee covers their
medical costs associated with the animal, medical and daily care during their
foster period and transport.
All animals adopted by our group MUST BE spayed/neutered prior to
finalizing the placement. All H4S's adoptables are in foster care in Rutherford Co,
NC and will be transported to your area on the 4th Saturday of each month,
after age-appropriate quarantine is complete and being spay/neutered and
micro chipped.
Your signature below states that you understand any future medical costs
are your responsibility and we have made full disclosure regarding our &
our vet's knowledge of the health of the animal.
Sometimes, for reasons beyond anyone's control, the adoption does not work
out. In this case, the animal must be returned to Howlin4Spirit CARes at the
adopter's expense. Howlin4Spirit drives transports along the eastern
seaboard as far as CT, 1X month.
Adoption contributions are not refundable, for any reason.****
